Step 1
Use bright, fresh colors that complement each other. Magazine models often are made up in bright colors so that their eyes pop off of the page. Canary yellows, lime greens, royal purples, sunny oranges and electric blues are all popular editorial colors. Complementary colors are found opposite each other on a color wheel. For example, purple and yellow are complementary colors.

Step 2
Use smokey colors such as blacks, grays and dark blues for sultry looks. Dark colors make the eyes recede, creating a sexy, mysterious look.
-
Step 3
Use neutral colors such as beiges, tans, browns and peaches for simple red-carpet looks. Your makeup shouldn’t compete with your hair and dress.
-
Step 4
Choose an eyeliner color that works with the style you are trying to imitate. Bright colored liners such as navy blue or purple are often chosen for editorial and runway looks while a simple black is chosen for red carpet looks.
-
Step 5
Blend your eyeshadow colors when replicating a red-carpet look. This gives the eyes softness. Don’t blend as much when doing editorial or runway looks. The sharp changes in color give the eye a more dramatic look.
