Things You'll Need:
- Socket wrench and sockets
- Regular wrenches
- Gloves
- Breaker bar
- Paper towels
-
Step 1
ToolsAssemble all the necessary tools before you begin. It’s best to have several sizes of regular wrenches and sockets handy to fit all the bolts that have to be removed. Put gloves on to avoid grease and engine grime as much as possible.
-
Step 2
Disconnect the battery to avoid shock. This is good practice before doing any work on a vehicle.
-
Step 3
Fan ShroudRemove the fan shroud to get to the fan. The fan shroud is located in the front of the truck and covers the radiator. You will need to locate and remove all bolts holding the shroud in place and then lift it out.
-
Step 4
Shroud RemovedTake the time to clean any garbage or grime that has settled under the shroud cover. You will have plenty of room to reach in and remove any rubbish before starting on the actual fan removal.
-
Step 5
Fan Belt Twists and TurnsDraw a diagram, take a picture, or just write out how the fan belt is attached over all the pulleys. This may seem a little extreme, but some fan belts have a lot of twists and turns, and if you don’t know exactly how it goes back on, it can be a struggle replacing it.
-
Step 6
Fan Belt RemovalUse a breaker bar to get good leverage on the tensioner to release tension from the serpentine belt. (It might be possible to use a socket wrench, but if the bolt is too tight, the breaker bar will work better.) Once tension is released, slowly work the fan belt off all pulleys. Check the belt for cracks and breaks to see if it needs replaced.
-
Step 7
Holding Fan Hub StillUnscrew bolts on the fan hub, which is attached to the water pump pulley. Hold the fan hub still with one hand while removing the bolts with the other, so the socket will catch the bolt. If you do not hold the fan hub still, the socket will not tighten and cause the bolts to loosen.
-
Step 8
Fan RemovedPull the fan off the fan hub and out of the truck. If you are removing the fan for a purpose other than replacement, reattach the bolts you removed from the hub so they do not get lost.
