Buy Gifts for Gardeners

Gifts for gardeners can be a challenge when the person has been gardening for years. They may have seen it all and done it all. It can be equally tough to buy for a new gardener because they have yet to define what they truly like. Read on to learn how to buy gifts for gardeners that will satisfy a newbie or a pro.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, have the gardener give you a tour of their garden.
Unless you know what they currently have and their interests it will be tough to find the right gift for your gardener. If you are unable to get a personal tour, ask them to send you a picture of their garden. Either way they will be flattered that you are taking an interest in their passion.

  2. Step 2

Next, make a mental note of the one thing that the gardener complains about on the tour.
Now, they may not come right out and whine but since they are putting their work on tour and describing it to you, it is likely that they will disclose to you what their biggest challenge has been. When they do, ask them what would make that problem go away or lessen. If a picture is being used instead of a tour, you can dig around for the answer during a conversation about the picture. This takes you closer to getting the right gift for your gardener.

  3. Step 3

Finally, ask the gardener what products they know of that would take care of the problem.
If they provide you with the answer then you have a basic theme to shop around. You do not have to purchase the exact item for them to be happy. Anything associated with helping solve the problem or lesson it will be welcome. If your gardener doesn't know what would solve his problem, take the issue up with a local garden center for possible solutions. The end result is the same. You will at least have a garden theme from which to base your shopping.

Tips & Warnings
  • Set a gift spending limit. Since you are looking at particular items that are associated with resolving the problem you should have some flexibility in pricing.
  • Don't try to solve all her gardening problems. Part of the challenge and rewards of having a garden is figuring out some of this on your own.
