To save money on utility bills you don't necessarily need a utility bill audit. Just follow these simple steps to easily save on your monthly energy bill.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Unplug the extra refrigerator. Many households have a "beer fridge" in the basement or garage to keep extra beer or soft drinks cold and not take up space in the primary kitchen refrigerator. Sounds like a great idea except usually these appliances are older and much less efficient than newer models. Plug the spare refrigerator in the day before your party and save money.

  2. Step 2

Turn off the air conditioner. Open the windows on opposing sides of your home to generate a refreshing cross breeze. Have a breeze in the house will allow you to turn up the air conditioner a few degrees and save money. Ceiling fans are another way to create a breeze and cool only the rooms that are being used.

  3. Step 3

Install aerators on all faucets and low flow shower heads. Using these devices means less work for your hot water heater and consequently less energy consumption will equates to you saving money. Most people never notice any difference in water pressure using aerators or the new low flow shower heads on the market.

  4. Step 4
    Eliminate Drafts

    Eliminate Drafts

Eliminate drafts from the chimney. Up to 14% of air leaking out of a house escapes through the chimney. Stop this leakage by sealing yours with an inflatable stopper or you can make one yourself by stuffing a heavy-duty bag with fiberglass insulation and wedging it in the chimney.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider a utility bill audit to find other ways to save money.
  • Make sure the chimney is clear of blockages before using the fireplace.
