You have made the daring yet awesome decision to audition for American Idol. Good for you! This can be a very exciting time, and will probably be one of the most memorable experiences of your life. Soak it all in, take lots of pictures, and follow these steps!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • You!
  • Music
  • Outfits
  • Makeup (if you're a girl, or heck, even if you're a guy!)
  1. Step 1

First you will want to decide exactly WHY you are auditioning for the show. Are you auditioning because you think you can sing, and you would LOVE to get some exposure, and let's face it- WIN AMERICAN IDOL? OR are you auditioning because you really want to get on TV and will be willing to make yourself look incredibly stupid to get there? Whatever your reasons are for wanting to audition, that's awesome. Just know why you want to be on American Idol so that you can know how to better prepare yourself for the big moment.

  2. Step 2

Next you will want to prepare a song. If you are the one that thinks you can sing, pick a good song. Pick one that has lots of emotion in it, and that fits your voice. Do not pick a song that is out of your voice range or your genre. Don't be fake with your song. Narrow it down to a handful of songs and practice, practice, practice. Record yourself singing. Post it online for critiques. Get your family and friends involved. Picking your song is a very big part of your American Idol audition.

If you are the one that really just wants to get on TV and get some attention, you may want to choose a song that is completely OPPOSITE of your voice range and genre. Pick something flamboyant with lots of energy. If you are a guy, pick a girl song. If you are a girl, pick a boy song. Pick something with shock value or a popular song with a new twist on it. This will still be a very important part of your American Idol audition.

It would be wise to always have a few backup songs. You may be asked to sing more than one song!

  3. Step 3

Choosing your outfit for your audition will be your next step. Make it correlate with your song. If you are singing a country song, you probably shouldn't go in dressing goth. Likewise, if you are singing heavy metal, don't go in with cowboy boots and a hat.

If you are serious about your singing career, pick something nice, but YOU. Don't pick something overly trashy or grungy. The outfit can be everything. You may have seen how harshly the judges judge some of the contestants outfits. You don't want to make the same mistakes that they have.

If you are looking for attention on American Idol, wear something completely crazy. Some crazy examples are Bikini Girl (who came into the American Idol audition wearing nothing but a skimpy bikini and high heels), a chicken suit (he must have been so hot!), and a Star Wars costume! Make it unique. Make yourself stand out.

It's also important to remember to dress for the weather. The auditions are held in the summer, so once you know where the audition will be, dress accordingly. It will help if you have a backup outfit on hand in case the weather changes drastically!

  4. Step 4

You will want to choose your makeup wisely as well. Experiment with it for a while until you get it just perfect. Don't forget to make it go with the outfit that you have chosen. Don't wear too much, but you will want to look good for American Idol!

If you are the one coming dressed up as a hot dog, the more makeup the better! The more dramatic, the better! Make yourself stand out!!!

  5. Step 5

Finally we are down to the actual American Idol auditions. Sing your little booties off and show some personality! Hopefully you will get through to the "big" judges. If so, be polite, professional, but make a statement. Make yourself unique so you can stand out.

If you want attention, be as crazy as possible. Have fun! If you're going to be silly on camera, go all the way!

    GOOD LUCK!
