Tomato sauce can make or break a meal. So creating the perfect tomato sauce is paramount for the success of your lasagna, baked ziti, spaghetti, meatball, or lentil soup recipes. In addition, using the right tomatoes for your sauce recipe is extremely important. Use a quality brand! This can mean the difference between a sauce that tastes like ketchup or real Italian cuisine!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 Cans Tuttorosso Tomatoes
  • 7-10 Cloves Garlic
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil - Cover bottom of sauce pot
  • 1 Chopped Red Onion
  • 2 shakes crushed red pepper
  • 7 Shakes Basil
  • 2 Bay Leaves
  1. Step 1

Cover bottom of sauce pot with Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Place chopped red onion and grated garlic in olive oil.

  2. Step 2

Add 2 shakes crushed red pepper.

  3. Step 3

    Add 7 shakes basil.

  4. Step 4

    Add 2 bay leaves.

  5. Step 5

Saute chopped red onion, grated garlic, and spices until tender. Add tomato cans when chopped ingredients are soft. (Use crushed tomatoes with basil for most recipes. Use peeled plum shaped tomatoes for sauce intended to be used for lentil soup.) Be sure not to let the chopped ingredients brown or burn.

  6. Step 6

Stir the sauce continuously. Let the ingredients simmer uncovered for 45 minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep stirring!
  • Don't let it burn! Burned sauce is not so tasty!

on 6/28/2009 My wife makes a great sauce, pretty much the way you describe it but she always uses fresh basil, if possible. She also puts some Romano cheese in the sauce.
