Things You'll Need:
- measuring tape for room dimensions
- patience
- knowledge of your living style
- eye for bargains
-
Step 1
First of all, you need to get out a tape measure and measure your room dimensions, so you will know exactly how much space is available for your sofa. Take into account leaving a walkway around the couch so people can sit down in it.
Take your room measurements to the store with you for reference. -
Step 2
Think about the size of your room in relation to the couch you want to purchase. If you have a small room, then an over-stuffed or large couch will simply look too big for the small space, and will make the room look even smaller than it already is.
So, for small rooms, buy a minimalist couch, a small loveseat, or two small plush chairs instead of a single, larger couch.
Also, a couch with open legs will look like it takes up less space in the room than a sofa with covered legs. -
Step 3
Think about what purpose this couch will serve. Do you need it to fold out into a guest bed? Do you need it for extra storage beneath the cushions? Then you'll need to buy a couch that will serve its purpose. It would be unwise and a waste of money to buy a sofa that will not be able to serve you like you need.
IKEA stores have sofas with hidden storage spaces beneath the couch cushions, and they also have sofas with pull-out beds.
Think logically about what other duties you need the sofa to perform, then buy an appropriate one. -
Step 4
Also think about how much wear & tear the sofa will endure in that room in your home. Do you have young children or lots of pets that will be jumping up on the couch often? Will your children be dripping ice cream or spilling milk on the cushions?
If you predict that the couch will have to endure a lot of abuse, then I suggest you purchase a couch that is made out of a tough, easy-to-clean material or fabric. If you live in that sort of crazy household, it would probably not be prudent to buy an expensive leather couch! -
Step 5
What if you have an extra sofa that you would like to put into a room or space, but the couch is old, out-dated, torn, or otherwise would not be a good fit for that space?
Look into couch slipcovers, or re-upholstering the cushions! You could completely cover the couch with a new, modern cover, or make a smaller change by re-upholstering the cushions! Even a small change could do wonders for an old couch!
Most large-chain stores carry full slipcovers (even Wal-Mart has them!) They can be anywhere from $50 to $100, but that's much cheaper than buying a new couch!
Look into your options for remaking an old couch into one that you will love!
