1
Designate three piles or boxes for your stuff before you start the decluttering process. One pile is the keep-and-put-away pile; another is the donate pile and the last is the throwaway pile.
-
2
Start in one room. Set a timer for 30 minutes and work as hard as you can to declutter that one room. To remain fresh and not become overwhelmed, work in 30-minute increments. Most rooms may only need a concentrated 30 minutes of effort to declutter them. Take a break and then continue or spread the effort out over several days. Remain in one room until it is complete before moving on to the next.

Determine which pile your things belong in as you work. If you use the item in question, then put it in the keep-and-put-away pile. If you don't use it, but it has sentimental value to you, add it to the keep-and-put-away pile. Anything that you do not use or does not have sentimental value should be thrown away or donated to charity.

4
At the end of the 30-minute session, stop and put away the items in your keep-and-put-away pile. Take the throwaway pile to the trash cans. Put the donate pile in the back seat of your car to take to a charity.

5
Maintain the order of the room. Once you have decluttered your house, take a few minutes each week and go through one or two rooms to keep the clutter from returning.

Tips & Warnings
Some people like to add a fourth pile -- the sell-on-eBay pile. If you have experience selling items on eBay, fine. If you aren't eBay savvy and you don't get around to listing the items online within a month, get rid of that fourth pile.
