Watching a Baseball game is a relaxing way to spend an afternoon or evening. Any game you watch, from Little League to the Majors, requires some knowledge of what's going on. One way to help you is by understanding the Umpire's signals.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

The umpires are meeting at home plate with the coaches. This is the pre-game meeting to discuss the ground rules, which are the specific rules that apply to each baseball field or park

  2. Step 2

The umpire will stand with his right hand raised in the air, or pump his fist while pointing to runner or the base. That means that the runner or batter is out.

  3. Step 3

The umpire stands with his arms spread apart at his sides. If it is a play at a base or home plate, this means that the runner is safe. If you see this sign as the umpire is covering a play in the field, this means the ball is in play.

  4. Step 4

The umpire raises his hand and makes a circling motion. This means the batted ball left the playing field in fair territory and is a home run.

  5. Step 5

The umpire raises his arms in the air, or waves his arms towards foul territory. This signifies that the batted ball is foul.

  6. Step 6

The umpire stands pointing his arm towards fair territory. The umpire is telling you that the ball is fair.

  7. Step 7

The umpire runs out into the outfield and raises his arm, holding two fingers in the air. The call here is a ground rule double; the ball has landed in fair territory and bounced out of play

  8. Step 8

The umpire holds his arms up, his right wrist grasping the left, the left hand is made into a fist. This signifies obstruction; the fielder has impeded a base runner from advancing. The play will continue until all activity has ended, then the umpires will determine where the base runners belong based on their positions at the time of the infraction. This is one you don't see often.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some of these signals will be personalized, especially at the major league level.
  • Understanding these signals will enhance your enjoyment of the game.
