When you want to lose fat, you want it gone TOMORROW. I've been there. If you want to lose fat fast – really fast – there are a few tricks you can try to lose weight practically overnight. One of the best ways to lose fat quickly is by following the Atkins 2 week induction, where you can lose a whopping 10% of the weight you need to lose in the first 2 weeks. Here's how to do it, in a nutshell...

  1. Step 1

    Forget calories and fat.

    The first step – forget everything you've learned before. Don't count calories, and don't think twice about eating fat. It sounds crazy, but this is how the diet works. Your body is going to switch from burning sugar (carbohydrates) to fat, and this means eating fat is GOOD.

    On Atkins induction, you can eat as much as you like, until you feel full (but not gorged). Have 3 full meals a day, and don't go more than 6 hours without eating.

  2. Step 2

    Count your carbs.

    You want to keep your carbs under 20 grams per day in order to lose fat fast. It helps to use a food counter, like FitDay, in order to keep track of your carbs. Otherwise, jot them down somewhere so you can keep track.

    You can eat as much of the following foods as you like: fish, chicken, beef, lamb, pork, cold pressed oils (olive, sunflower, canola, sesame, coconut, etc), butter, and eggs.

    You also get up to 3 tablespoons heavy cream, and 100 grams of hard cheese a day.

  3. Step 3

    Give up processed foods and sugar.

    You may NOT eat and sugar, grains, or starches in the first two weeks of the diet. Fruit is not allowed to start, but some will be added back later. Beans and nuts are also not allowed to start, but get added later. Vegetables should be low carb, so avoid carrots, corn, peas, and especially root vegetables like potatoes. Pretty much, stick to your meats and salads as listed in the point above.

    If you must use a sweetener, you can use sulacrose (Splenda) or a sugar alcohol like Xylitol. Count the carbs for these, though!

  4. Step 4

    Remember your veggies.

    The 20 grams of carbohydrates a day should mostly come from fresh, green veggies. You should be eating roughly three (loosely packed) cups of salad greens, or two cups of salad greens plus one serving of other vegetables (like asparagus, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, green beans, etc).

  5. Step 5

    Get active.

    As with any other diet, you need to exercise. Do some type of physical activity every day – dance, swim, hula hoop, walking, hiking, or whatever you enjoy most. I found that setting the treadmill in front of my game console motivated me to exercise while I played. The most important thing is to find something you like, so you'll be more likely to stick with it.

  6. Step 6

    Ditch the caffeine.

    If you can, it's a good idea to give up the coffee and diet soda pop. The reason is that coffee and many diet soft drinks contain citric acid, which is also a component in fat metabolism. Some feel that drinking these decreases the amount of fat your body can burn. These also cause insulin spikes, which can increase hunger.

    While many dieters continue to use them without ill effects, if you want instant results, consider dropping these from your plan!

    The best thing to drink is water. Try to drink 6-8 glasses a day.

  7. Step 7

    Take vitamins.

    Buy a good multivitamin, and start taking it. This is a good idea on any diet, and many believe that the body will allow more weight loss if you are getting enough vitamins.

  8. Step 8

    Weigh and measure.

    Following this plan, many people report weight loss on the very first day! You may also wish to take measurements.

    Atkins recommends that you take measurements and weight yourself before you start, so you have a comparison. Also, consider getting your cholesterol and blood sugar levels taken. This way, you can see for yourself when your levels improve over time on the diet.

  9. Step 9

    Buy the book, and get support.

    If you are succeeding with this way of eating, do yourself a favor and get the book. Also, join an online or offline support group, so you can chat with many others who face the same issues (plus get some great recipes).
