How to Make a Bottle Cap Fishing Lure

Bottle cap lures can be an economical and fun way to add a little variety to fishing excursions. Fashioned from basic bottle caps, these lures catch sunlight and play with river and lake reflections to attract fish. Particularly effective when angling for lake trout, these lures can be made at home and used as replacement lures for bait or wet-fly fishing.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the pliers to push the bottle cap against a hard surface until it bends into a taco shell shape.

    • 2

Slide a sinker into the cradle of the bent cap and clamp the bottle cap around it by clamping it again with pliers until it closes shut.

    • 3

Place the bottle cap in a vise so that the ribbed edges face downward.

    • 4

Drill two holes in the top of the bottle cap . Orient the holes lengthwise, placing them 1/8 inch from the ends of the bottle cap top.

    • 5

Clip a swivel onto one of the bottle cap holes.

    • 6

Pry the metal ring open slightly with your fingers, and slide one end into the second hole, turning it in a circle until it secures.

    • 7

Attach the hook to the metal ring.

    • 8

Tie the fishing line to the swivel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Painting your lure can make it even more attractive to fish. Place scented bait inside the lure before casting for better results.

  • Always wear protective eye gear when drilling metal.
