How to Decorate a Bedroom for Valentine's Day

Decorating a bedroom for Valentine's Day can be lots of fun---especially if you are creating a special atmosphere as a surprise for your Valentine. Keeping in mind that lighting sets the mood, gauzy fabrics are dreamy and flowers always communicate romance, go ahead and get carried away using pink and more pink as your Valentine theme color. Close the door to the bedroom and post a Happy Valentine's Day poster on the door---along with a smaller one that says, "Do Not Disturb."

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set the mood by adjusting the lighting. Find every candlestick you own, and fill them with pink and white candles; place them all over the room. Drape some pink scarves (or squares of filmy fabric) over the lampshades. Block natural light by adding tape and/or cardboard onto windows so that no light shows through behind shades, blinds or drapes.

  2. Step 2

Use a dozen yards or so of net or gauzy fabric to glamorize the bed. Gather a floor-to-ceiling-length piece, tack into the ceiling on all four corners directly above the bed, and create swags that you can tie back with pink silk ribbons and then release so that your bed rests inside a romantic tent.

  3. Step 3

Buy as many fresh pink flowers as you can afford; place them in several vases around the room. If fresh flowers aren't an option, stop by a thrift store, where you'll be able to buy dozens of used fake ones for very little. Take them home and give them a bath; spray them with cologne before stashing them in vases.

  4. Step 4

Find every picture you can locate of the two of you together. Cut out red-construction-paper hearts, glue on the photos, and tack them up around the room. If you have a wedding album, open it to your favorite page, and display it on the dresser.

  5. Step 5

Put a large basket to use by placing it prominently in the room. Line it with a pink cloth, and fill with a bottle of grape juice, wine or champagne, and lots of chocolates. Throw in some candy conversation hearts for fun.
