One of the most important decisions regarding your family's health is finding a good doctor in your area. However, if you've just moved to a community, it can be difficult to find one. Friends, co-workers and associates can help steer you in the right direction. Your insurance company also can provide a list of doctors to aid your search.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Telephone or computer with Internet access
  • Previous physician
  1. Step 1

Talk to your family, friends, a school nurse or people at church. Ask them about local doctors.

  2. Step 2

Contact your insurance company, which should have a list of area providers in your network and their specialties.

  3. Step 3

Request a referral from your previous physician. Doctors network like other professionals. If you are moving where your current doctor knows a physician, she should be able to refer you to someone.

  4. Step 4

Go to the clinic and ask for information about the doctors. Basic biography information should be available. You also likely can obtain information about their practices and whether the doctors are board certified.

  5. Step 5

Look for a specialist by contacting associations, groups and organizations. If you have heart issues, contact the American Heart Association for doctors endorsed by the organization.

Tips & Warnings
  • Comfort with your doctor is important. If the first doctor you visit isn't a good fit, keep looking until you find someone.
