How to Clean a Portable Igloo Ice Chest
Before you go on your next camping or fishing trip, your Igloo ice chest needs to be cleaned to make sure that it keeps food fresh and odor-free. If you've accidentally left food in the cooler for a long time, the cleaning job can get messy, but with the following tips, it need not ruin your day.

General Cleaning
-
1
Empty out the cooler. Clean out any food or containers inside your Igloo ice chest. Put rubber gloves on if you must and get in there and dispose of the mess. Dump any liquid out of the cooler.
-
2
Rinse the cooler out. For a quick clean when your cooler isn't that dirty, simply rinse it out and allow it to dry.
-
-
3
Fill the cooler with warm or hot water, and allow it to soak. If there are stains, mildew or general funk, this will help loosen them up and provide a deeper clean.
-
4
Use a sponge or rag to wash the cooler with soap and water. Use a dish detergent or mild soap, and wash the inside of the cooler thoroughly. Wipe the outside clean with the sponge or rag.
-
5
Rinse all of the soap out of the cooler. Then wipe dry or stand it upside down with the lid open and allow it to air dry.
Clean Grime or Smells

6
Use a sanitizing spray cleaner (like 409) to clean the inside of the cooler of any mildew. Spray it down and allow the cleaner to soak in for five minutes or so. Then wipe it down with rag or paper towel. Use a light abrasive like a green scrub pad for stubborn stains.
-
7
Use an acidic solution like vinegar or lemon juice for harsh smells. Apply this to the inside of the cooler, allow it to soak in for several hours, then wipe down.
-
8
Rinse the cooler. Thoroughly rinse out the cooler so there's no residue of the cleaner or acidic solution. Dry the cooler before using it to store food.
