You can use appliance paint to transform the look of old kitchen appliances. Hard-enamel spray paint designed specifically for refrigerators and other appliances is easy to apply, but plan on using more than one coat for a smooth finish. Follow some step-by-step instructions for using appliance paint to freshen up the look of your kitchen. You can find all of the supplies you need for this project at your local home improvement store.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Remove any items from the appliance you wish to paint. For example, remove all of the food and racks from the fridge and remove the racks and burners from the stove. Place the appliance in a well-ventilated area, preferably outside, before using the appliance paint.

  2. Step 2

Remove the handles from the appliance doors. Look for a screw under the bottom lip of the refrigerator door or a screw on the back of an oven door.

  3. Step 3

Clean the appliance surface that you intend to paint thoroughly with a good degreasing cleaner. Let the appliance dry thoroughly.

  4. Step 4

Sand the surface with light-grade sandpaper. Wear a mask while sanding and be careful not to oversand; you just need to rough the surface enough so that the appliance paint will stick.

  5. Step 5

Remove the doors from the hinges of the appliance and lay them on a flat surface with the side to be painted facing up. Seal the inside of the appliance with sheets of plastic with painter's tape around the perimeter.

  6. Step 6

Wear a mask and hold the can of appliance paint 10 to 12 inches away from the surface to be painted. Apply the spray with a smooth, back-and-forth motion. Cover the entire surface of the appliance, the doors and the door handles. Let the appliance paint dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  7. Step 7

Repeat Step 6 if the first coat looks blotchy and uneven. More than likely, you will need to use more than one coat of appliance paint to achieve an even finish.

  8. Step 8

Reassemble the doors and door handles on your appliance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try using appliance paint in combination with stainless steel films that you can apply to the front of your appliance doors like wallpaper.
  • Appliance paint fumes are very strong.
