Your home computer can be a great source of passive income.

We've all heard the fantastic stories about average Joes making loads of cash using the internet. Well guess what? These stories really aren't all that unusual or unachievable. You too can tap into the goldmine that is the internet superhighway. Learn how to make real money online using the power of affiliate marketing programs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • A website, social media profile or blog
  • A PayPal account
  1. Step 1

First you will need to choose your subject matter. The key to making money online using affiliate programs is to focus on a topic area that will interest a particular group of people and then only join affiliate programs that will complement this topic. Of course your chosen subject must be one that you are also highly passionate about to ensure your success. Choosing a topic that you find boring or that is of little consequence to others will only yield a poor return. If you are already a business owner, this step can be pretty easy as you can use your existing area of expertise or take this opportunity to launch a supplementary product or service.

  2. Step 2
Most social media sites have a free blogging tool you can use.
Most social media sites have a free blogging tool you can use.

Next you will need to gather up quality content and organize it to be published on your website, blog or social media profile. Let me stress the word "quality". Quality content is any information that is actually useful to your visitors and is also search-engine friendly. This is important to drive traffic to your site or blog. Your content can be text, audio, video or multimedia. Any combination is fine so long as your visitors find value to it. If your visitors don't like what they see, they are less likely to stick around and definitely won't have any incentive to click through your affiliate links. If you do not have your own website or blog already, you can easily create one rather quick and inexpensively or you can take advantage of the free blogs usually provided by social media sites like Facebook.

  3. Step 3

Once your basic content is up, it is time to add your affiliate advertising. If you have done a good job of creating search-engine friendly content, then you should already have a functional list of keywords in mind that you can now use to search for related affiliate programs. (Tip: You can steal your Adword competitors' keywords for FREE - check the Resources list at the end of this article.) You can also add additional related keywords that would be of further interest to your visitors. For instance, if you blog about do-it-yourself home improvement, you might search for affiliate programs that market tools, paint, or complementary services such as interior decorating and landscaping. The best affiliate programs are those that already have a solid brand name within its industry and therefore would be easily recognizable by your visitors; however, as long as the program is related to your content, any affiliate link has the potential to do well. Sign up for three to five programs and strategically place your affiliate links throughout your site or blog.

  4. Step 4

Continue to update your site's content regularly. Check for broken links and add new content and affiliate advertisements as needed. You want to keep your site's visitors coming back for more. The more quality and fresh the content, the more repeat traffic you will gain and the more likely your affiliate links will be clicked through. Regularly updating your content will also keep the search engine spiders crawling your site. This means a boost in your organic rankings and a greater chance of attracting an increase in traffic.

  5. Step 5
Affiliate programs can turn your web presence into a cashcow.

Finally, duplicate your work. You can assimilate the same or similar content across multiple online platforms and double your potential income from your affiliate links. For instance, you can write a quick blog post about a particular subject and then turn that same blog post into a longer, information-packed article for free distribution or for posting to a site like eHow which pays you for your contributions. Place your affiliate links in your author's resource box or as a hyperlink (if allowed) from one of your keywords within the article. You can also add your affiliate links to your newsletters or include them in your email signatures. There are many ways to take advantage of your affiliate links through multiplicity. Just remember, wherever you use your affiliate links, make sure that there is useful, related, quality content as an incentive to your visitors.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are not the greatest copywriter, you can easily add quality content to your site by obtaining articles from free article distribution sites. Many experts give permission for these sites to allow webmasters to publish their articles on their sites as long as the author bylines are included. It still helps to add your personal touch by providing a summary or your opinion of the article in your own words.
  • There are many ways to incorporate your affiliate links into your site or blog. Blogs, especially those on social media sites, many not allow too much space for stand-alone banner or image ads within the margins. In this case, you can monetize your content by hyperlinking some of the keywords within the actual article text to the related affiliate link.
  • Twitter can be used in lieu of a website or blog. Gain followers by posting interesting, quality tweets daily and follow them up weekly with a related affiliate link.
  • Be patient! It can take a bit of time before you see any return on your affiliate programs. Your success is directly relevant to the amount of traffic that is driven to your site. Your focus should be primarily on creating relevant, quality, search-engine friendly content to your site regularly. If a program doesn't yield any return after 6 months, swap it out for a new one. Finding the right mix of affiliate programs will be trial and error at first.
  • Limit the number of affiliate advertisements you place per page. Too many affiliate links can be a turnoff to your visitors.
  • Avoid affiliate advertisements that cause pop-up or pop-under windows to appear with a mouse-over. These will greatly annoy visitors and cause them to navigate away from your site.
  • NEVER pay to join an affiliate program. There is no guarantee of a return on your investment despite the promises of the savvy sales copy. ONLY join FREE affiliate programs. Remember, you are actually assisting the marketer in promoting their product for which you deserve compensation. Would you pay a potential employer to work for their company?
