Bath salts are a fun and easy way to add some color, sparkle, and a little luxury to an afternoon bath. They also soften skin, and leave a light and pleasant scent on the skin that lasts all day. Unfortunately, a small bag or jar of scented bath salts can cost quite a bit and only last for one or two soaks, making it barely worth the cost. The good news is, you can enjoy the same quality bath salts you find in any bath and body store for a mere fraction of the cost - and have some fun at the same time - if you learn how to make bath salts at home. Intrigued? Follow this easy recipe to make bath salts yourself in your very own kitchen, add any color and flavor you desire, and save your money for something else:

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dead Sea Salt - 2 cups
  • Epsom Salt - 1/2 cup
  • Baking Soda - ½ cup
  • Essential Oils or Soap Oils
  • Liquid Soap Coloring
  • Soap Glitter
  • Large Glass Bowl
  • Wooden Spoon or Spatula
  • Optional: Lavender, Chamomile, Orange Peel, Rose Petals, etc
  • Small Plastic Bags, Containers, or Glass Jars for storage
  1. Step 1

In a large glass bowl, mix together 2 cups of Dead Sea salt, 1 cup of Epsom salt, and baking soda. Stir with wooden spoon or spatula until evenly mixed together.

  2. Step 2

Add 20 to 30 drops of essential oils or soap perfume scent of your choice, adding 10 drops at a time and stirring well until the oil is evenly spread. Add more or less oil for a stronger or lighter scent. Mix and match oils to create new smells: try mixing lavender and vanilla for a relaxing aroma, or raspberry and mint for an uplifting scent.

  3. Step 3

Add liquid coloring of your choice, one drop at a time, and stir continuously to spread the color evenly. The more coloring you add, the darker the color will be. 3 to 4 drops is enough for a light, pastel coloring, while 7-8 drops will give you a bolder color. Mix primary colors together to get new colors.

  4. Step 4

If you would like sparkling bath salts, you can add a few pinches of soap glitter to your batch. Add more glitter for a little extra sparkle.

  5. Step 5

Once you have mixed in the coloring, your bath salts are complete! You can also add ground up lavender or chamomile buds to your bath salts for a stronger aroma, or rose petals for more luxurious bathwater. You can store your bath salts in plastic zip-lock bags, or use leftover jam or baby food jars, or clean, plastic containers. Bath salts can be stored in your bathroom or linen closet until they are ready to be used.

  6. Step 6

To use: pour ½ cup to 1 cup of bath salt under running water, similar to the way you would add bubble bath. Salts should begin to dissolve as the tub fills, and add a soft tinge of color and scent to the water. Take a bath as usual, and enjoy the aroma, color, and the soft skin you'll have afterwards! Use as often as you like, or save for special occasions. You can also make bath salts as homemade gifts for friends and families.
