This article will explain how to perform different basic martial arts kicks.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yourself
  • Kicking bag such as wavemaster, etc. (optional)
  • Partner (optional)
  1. Step 1

First kick is the basic front kick. This kick is used to defend yourself from oncoming attacks such as a punch or tackle in some instances. The tackle depends on if they are running straight at you or bent over at which point you would use the knee to attack. To perform this kick get in a front stance with both feet pointed forward about shoulder width apart to begin with. Next, raise the knee and kick, bringing the leg back in a snapping motion and then sit the leg back down into the stance. Remember to strike with the ball of the foot by curling the toes upward and kicking, this will prevent you from damaging the toes.

  2. Step 2

The next basic kick is the side kick. This kick is used to defend against different attacks from the side or front. To do this kick, you will want to position yourself in a front stance again to begin with. Next, raise the knee again like in the front kick and turning to the side by pivoting your foot, bring the knee into the chest to chamber the kick for power. Now, kick outward and strike with the heel of the foot. Bring the leg back into the chest and sit it back down. You have just done a side kick.

  3. Step 3

Third is the roundhouse kick. This kick can be used to strike to the head, torso, or legs for defense. This kick can be done by getting into the front stance to begin with. Next, you will pick up the back leg swinging it around using the instep to strike with and kicking. See image for better explanation. After striking, sit the leg back down and you are done.

  4. Step 4

With these basic kicks, you will be able to train and defend yourself with your legs and oncoming attacks better. TRAIN HARD!!

Tips & Warnings
  • To challenge yourself, try a few kicks at a time such as a few sidekicks or a sidekick and roundhouse with the same leg.
  • Please consult physician before begining any martial arts training as it could result in damaged joints, etc.
  • I am not liable for any damages done to yourself by trying to perform these techniques without supervision of a qualified instructor.
