If you fish long enough, you will encounter different mechanical malfunctions and breakdowns that threaten your time on the water. One of the more common malfunctions, if you are running a Minn Kota foot control trolling motor is a broken spring on the on/off switch located on the foot pedal. In this article you will learn how to make a quick replacement without sending your Minn Kota trolling motor to the shop.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Household Spring
  • Regular Screw Driver
  1. Step 1

If you look on the foot pedal of your Minn Kota trolling motor, you will see the round cover that covers the on/off switch. At the rear of the round cover there is an indention. Use a regular screw driver in the indention to press in on plastic part that holds the cover in place. When the little plastic piece is depressed the round cover will pop out.

  2. Step 2

With the cover removed, you will see the actual switch that turns trolling motor on and off. Remove the parts of the old spring that may be left.

  3. Step 3

Now that you see the size of spring that you are dealing with, you can go to any hardware store a buy a generic household spring and cut it to the size you need. Make sure that the spring is long enough and strong enough to keep the cover raised off of the on/off switch.

  4. Step 4

Now that the cover is off, the old spring is all gone, and the spring is cut to the right size take the spring and place over the switch and put the cover back on. The cover should just pop right back on. Now you are ready to go back fishing!
