Hot and cold teas make for soothing and refreshing drinks year round. Those who like flavored teas or spiced chai tea can make their own teabags to taste. All one needs is instant black tea, common dried flavorings, and empty tea bags. Store them in a cool dry place, and you can spend less while enjoying your favorite teas.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • instant black tea
  • instant green tea (optional and if available)
  • raspberry, cherry, and lemon kool-aid packets (unsweetened)
  • cardamom
  • cinnamon
  • cloves
  • dried ginger
  • anise
  • powdered milk
  • cane sugar
  • tea bags
  1. Step 1

To make spiced chai tea bags, blend the following powders in a small bowl:
1/2 cup instant black tea, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp cardamom, 1/2 teaspoon dried ginger, 1/2 teaspoon cloves, 1/4 tsp anise, 1/4 cup cane sugar, and 1/4 cup dried milk (if desired).

  2. Step 2

Next, spoon the mixture into tea bags, about 2 tsp each. Since the powders are very fine, use tea bags that have a good seal.

  3. Step 3

After you seal the bags, either label the tags, or put them all in a labeled container. Store in a cool dry place. If you have included powdered milk into your spiced chai bags, be sure use them all by the milk's expiration date.

  4. Step 4

To make a fruity blended tea, mix instant black tea with Kool-Aid powder in a small bowl. Try blending about 1/2 cup instant tea with one packet of raspberry, cherry, or lemon drink mix powder. If you like the fruit tea to be more tart, increase the proportion of Kool-aid.

Add white cane sugar if desired, and mix the ingredients thoroughly.

  5. Step 5

Next, spoon the powder mixture into the tea bags. Two tsp per bag is sufficient. Seal the bags and label the tags so that you know what kind of tea it is.

An alternative to using tea bags is to store the dried tea mixture in a labeled container. Since instant tea and drink mix powders dissolve on contact with water, tea bags are not essential for this recipe. You can simply spoon the mixture into a glass of water.

  6. Step 6

To make a lighter fruit tea, try blending the Kool-Aid packets with instant green tea, if you can find it at the store.

Tips & Warnings
  • Coffee lovers and caffeine addicts can alter the chai bag recipe by replacing the instant black tea with instant coffee. This makes a great breakfast drink.
