Setting up a home office can seem like a daunting task, but these steps will help you organize your needs and resources to finally have a dedicated space to your home based business.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Define your job. List your main work responsibilities and other tasks for which your home office will be used. Example: Small business accountant, billing, office resources. This step helps determine what you need.

  2. Step 2

List what you need to complete your job. Remember to include a solid, easy to use organization method. Example: Desk, computer, printer with fax, phone line, waste basket, file cabinet, small table and two chairs. Check what you have and what you need.

  3. Step 3

Decide what space and resources your home can spare. A home office can be located in the basement, spare bedroom, or a corner of the living room. What budget can you spare to bring this together?

  4. Step 4

Design on paper where the items will be before you move everything in. A "U" or "L" shaped desk unit gives you more space to use. The computer may be facing the door with cabinet or credenza behind you, or against the wall. Think everything in it's place.

  5. Step 5

Move your desk and other items in to the space. Take time to organize yourself and your office. Determine accessibility and convenience.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your budget is strained, second hand office furniture is available online or in used office supply stores.
  • Before you move in, purge out old papers, magazines, etc.
  • What kind of personality you have influences how your office can work best. Do you need uncluttered, sparse surfaces to focus better?
  • It's best to keep your home office dedicated to it's primary purpose, not make it a part time play room, kids corner, or dining room.
