You need to apply for unemployment benefits as soon as you get laid off so you can get a check sooner rather than later. There are several ways to apply for unemployment benefits:
APPLY ONLINE. Many states allow you to apply online for unemployment benefits. Online services may also allow you to file a new unemployment claim, claim your weekly benefits, or check on the progress of an existing claim.
APPLY OVER THE PHONE. Of course applying online is ideal, but if the your state does not offer online services, applying for unemployment benefits over the phone is convenient as well.
APPLY BY MAIL OR FAX. All states offer this option of applying for unemployment benefits. The form is frequently offered online so you can download it, print it, complete it and mail or fax it to the appropriate office.

- Complete mailing address

- Social Security number
