   One of the easiest ways to buy stamps is to go online to the United States Postal Service website, www.usps.com. On the main page of the website, click on BUY STAMPS. You will then be able to select the kind and amount of stamps you want, pay with your credit or debit card, and your stamps will be mailed directly to you!

   If you are on a rural route, you can simply leave a check in your mailbox with a note saying how many stamps you want, and your mail carrier will leave them for you. Rural carriers are required to carry stamp stock sufficient to supply their customers on a daily basis. If they don't happen to have enough stamps with them that day, you will receive your stamps the next day with your mail. There is a special reusable envelope that you can obtain from your carrier to put your check in to make stamp purchases. Ask your carrier for a PS 3227R.

   If you receive your mail from a city carrier who walks and delivers mail, you can obtain a Stamps By Mail envelope from them. You can then put a check for stamps inside, select the type and amount of stamps you want on the form, and send it out with your regular mail. You will receive your stamp order the next day. City carriers do not carry stamps with them so they are required to take your order back to the post office to have it filled.

   There are often other outlets in your area that sell stamps. Grocery stores, gas stations, and even hospitals often sell stamps as an additional service or convenience. If you have a nearby source in your area, buying stamps there can save you time as well as the trouble of waiting in line at your local post office!

• If you aren't sure whether you get your mail delivered by a rural or city carrier, call your local post office.

• Don't put cash out in your mailbox for stamps! The post office cautions against this, as it could get stolen. They prefer you purchase stamps from your carrier by using a check.
