How To Understand Color Theory And Make-Up

Makeup color theory has several facets.

Color theory in regard to makeup refers to the way you choose makeup shades, be it for foundation, blush, lipstick or eyeshadow. Color theory can refer to whether the makeup is matte or shiny, whether it is neutral or bright, or how the makeup complements your coloring. Taking these factors into consideration will result in a seamless makeup application that looks like it was done by a professional makeup artist.

Instructions

1. Rub makeup like foundation, concealer and face powder into the top of your hand. Look to see if there is a shimmer. Shimmer makeup gives a glow to the skin, while matte makeup looks flat. Face makeups like foundation, concealer and face powder should not have too much shimmer; only one of the products should give the glow.

2. Rub face makeup along the jaw line to see its true color. You want a face makeup that is close to your natural color, and the skin at the jaw line will be paler than your cheeks or forehead, so you can tell if there is too much contrast.

3. Choose eyeshadow shades based on the warm and cool method. Warm complexions refer to people who look best in warm colors, like red, orange, gold and yellow. Cool complexions refer to people who look good in cool colors, like blue, purple and silver.

4. Choose lipstick shades based on eyeshadow colors. If you're wearing a bright or dark eyeshadow color, choose a neutral lip shade. If your eyeshadow is more neutral, you can wear a bright lipstick shade.
