The biggest challenge with a dog sitting business may be finding new customers. Here are five ways to market your dog sitting business locally.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Visit a Dog Park

If you have a local dog park, an afternoon spent talking to dog owners and handing out business cards can be just the boost your new business needs. It helps if you also bring along your own impeccably cared for dog. It's important to show people your passion and concern for dogs before you ask them to trust you with their own.

  2. Step 2

    Co-Market with Veterinary Clinics

Once you've designed a business card and a professional looking brochure, visit local veterinary clinics and ask if you can display your brochures and business cards on the counter. Although many veterinary clinics offer boarding services, some clients are looking for home pet sitters and will ask the vet for a recommendation. Make sure yours is the first name that comes to mind and that you're easy to reach. It's important to be conscientious and do the job well to earn the trust of the veterinary clinics. They'll hesitate to recommend anyone to their clients who doesn't do an exceptional job.

  3. Step 3

    Offer a Referral Program

A referral program is a simple, low cost way to bring in new customers. Let each client know if they refer a customer to you, they'll get half off of their next pet sitting. You'll be surprised at how rapidly people will spread the word when they know there's a reward in it for them.

  4. Step 4

    Teach Dog First Aid Classes

Another way to market a dog sitting business is to teach a free class on dog first aid. There are few classes offered on this topic and many people are unaware of how to handle dog related emergencies other than calling their vet who may not be available late at night. Not only will you demonstrate your ability to handle emergencies that might arise in your dog sitting business, but you'll be providing a valuable service and marketing your business at the same time.

  5. Step 5

    Volunteer

Volunteer at local animal shelters. Not only will you be doing a good deed, but the shelter will refer people who adopt animals to you.

on 6/23/2009 Thanks for the advice on how to market a pet sitting business. My friend has a couple of clients and volunteers for Akita Rescue in Jacksonville. I know she can use the extra income more clientele would bring. I'll be sure to show her this article. Another 5* article.
