How to Delete a Search Companion

Whether you seek files, folders, people or printers, the Search Companion helps you find what you need in the shortest amount of time. There are, however, some situations in which you may want to delete--or, in reality, "hide" a Search Companion behavior. For instance, to get a more streamlined pursuit, you could indicate which fields are to be shown in the results window. You can even "turn off" the animated Search Companion if it becomes a distraction.

Instructions

    • 1

Click on "Start," and then select "Search."

    • 2

Select "View," and then "Choose Details."

    • 3

Check the categories you would like to be shown listed under the "Details" field list section. (Note: To move the placement of a category up or down, or to hide it from view when searches are conducted, simply check the desired category, then click on the "Up," "Down," or "Hide" button.) Next, click "OK."

    • 4

      Click "Change Preferences."

    • 5

To hide the animation character, select "Without An Animation Screen Character" and then click "Change Preferences" again to select other options, if desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Conduct a test search before adjusting the settings of the Search Companion and take note of the width of each search result field (for example, "Name," "Size"). You can change the pixel width of any search result field in the "Details" field list section. (See Step 3.)
