Instructions

    • 1

Apply a topical steroid such as prescription-strength cortisone, which is often used to treat the scaling associated with psoriasis. Use daily and follow with a thick moisturizer. Steroid creams are associated with side effects, such as thinning of the skin or internal absorption, and are best confined to small areas.

    • 2

Use Vaseline or other over-the-counter ointments. Menthol-based ointments may provide additional soothing relief.

    • 3

Use products containing coal tar. Coal tar can be found in shampoos, bath solutions, creams or lotions. These products may have an unpleasant odor and a heavy, greasy consistency. For best results, apply topical coal tar products at night and wash off in the morning.

Use salicylic acid treatments, such as lotions, gels, soaps and shampoos. Use salicylic acid products sparingly, and follow with a moisturizer.

    • 5

Gently rub the area with a wet washcloth, or place it under running water for 5 minutes.
