How to Replace a Washing Machine Agitator

How to Replace a Washing Machine Agitator thumbnail
The Agitator

If not for the agitators, a washing machine would be little more than a soaking machine. The agitator moves the clothes in preprogrammed patterns, essentially scrubbing the articles of clothing in any given load. If the agitator does not turn or if you notice your clothing is frayed or ripped, it is time for a new agitator. This relatively straightforward repair takes minutes and does not require anything more than a flathead screwdriver. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Use a screwdriver to pry off the agitator cap, if there is one.

    • 2

Turn the entire agitator counterclockwise to loosen.

    • 3

Once completely loosened, pull the old agitator straight up and out. This will reveal a threaded pole that is connected to the motor (under the washer).

    • 4

Slide the new agitator down over the threaded pole.

    • 5

Screw the new agitator on by turning it clockwise. When the entire wash basin begins to move with your turns, you have secured it properly.

    • 6

Snap the agitator cap back on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some agitators have caps and some do not. Agitator caps should snap off with little force.

  • Make sure the unit is unplugged before attempting any repairs or replacements.
