How to Buy a Multi-Region DVD Player Online
All DVDs sold in the U.S. are encoded for Region 1 and can only be played in Region 1 or multi-region (also called "region-free") players. Having a region-free DVD player will enable you to play selections that may not be available in the U.S. If you're a fan of international films or television and have been frustrated that you can't purchase a favorite film that can be played at your home, then buying a player capable of playing DVDs from all around the world is easier than you might think.

1
Determine what features you want your region-free DVD player to have. Do you want it to be compatible not only with DVDs from all regions but with worldwide power outlets? Will it play CDs or VCDs (video CDs)? Make a list of all the formats you would like your machine to play.

2
Consider getting a Blu-ray player. Many Blu-ray players are not only region free for Blu-ray discs, but are also region free for standard DVDs. If you have a high-definition TV (HDTV) or are considering getting one soon, the capability of playing Blu-ray discs could be added to your desired features list.

Shop for your player online or at an independent electronics retailer. Large retailers don't usually carry region-free players, so you'll need to find vendors that do. Ultimate Electronics, a mid-size chain in several states, is one retailer that sells region-free DVD players. If you are buying online, Amazon.com is also a good vendor for region-free and Blu-ray players.

Check the package or technical specifications for final verification. All DVD player packaging will specify which region(s) they are capable of playing or will have a label saying they are region-free.

Tips & Warnings
If you decide to buy a Blu-ray player, you can still play your old DVDs on it. If you haven't yet purchased an HDTV, the player will still be able to display the disc on your TV; however, the picture quality will not be true high definition.
Having a multi-region DVD player will allow you to make legal copies of your DVDs, as it nullifies most copyright protections on your DVDs. However, this does not make it legal to violate the DVDs' copyrights.
