How to Clean Wood Floors With Steam

Steam cleaning is a new green technology that reduces the use of chemicals in the home. The high heat kills bacteria, viruses, mold spores and dust mites without the use of chemicals. In addition, the waste is simply water, reducing the amount of household chemicals poured down the drain and potentially released into the environment. It is also easier to clean wood floors with steam than to use a mop and bucket for the task.

Things You'll Need

• Steam mop (available at most department stores)
• Cloth cover for the mop head
• Dry mop

Instructions

1. Place the cloth cover on the steam mop before filling and plugging in the appliance.

2. Fill the reservoir on the steam mop, plug it in and allow water to heat.

3. Use a dry mop to remove dust and larger pieces of dirt from the wood floors. For best results, be sure to get under furniture.

4. Push the steam mop over the entire wood floor using the controls to release steam to the head of the mop. Continue to move the mop to prevent burns in the wood floor.

5. Move furniture, such as end tables and chairs, out of the area to clean the wood floor under them.

6. Refill the reservoir as needed. Use the time that the water takes to heat up to move and replace furniture.

Tips & Warnings

• Replace the cloth cover as needed to remove more dirt.

• Do not let the steam mop stay in one place too long when you steam clean a wood floor. The high heat can cause discoloration or softening of the finish on the wood. Do not allow children to use or play around a steam cleaner as serious burns can result. Be sure to unplug the steam mop when it is not in use.
