DivX is a quality file type that works well in DVD players and with MP3 players. Most MP4s utilize the DivX type of compression. DivX cannot be read by every computer program, though. If you want to use DivX files in a program that does not support DivX files, you will first need to convert the file to a file type that the program supports, such as Quicktime. Quicktime will work in many programs in which DivX will not and on systems that do not have the DivX codec.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Download DigitalVideo Converter (see Resources). Follow the step-by-step screens to install the program on your computer.

  2. Step 2

Add your DivX file to the converter. Click "Add video file(s)" and browse for your file.

  3. Step 3

Select "Quicktime" as your file type. It appears as "QT" in the "Save as:" drop-down menu.

  4. Step 4

Change the file width and file height. "File Width" and "File Height" are listed under "Output File." You can make it match the original file by using the dimensions that are listed for the original file beneath the video screen.

  5. Step 5

Press the "Convert Video" button. It will bring up a window that allows you to select a destination folder and name the new file. "Converting video" will appear at the bottom of the screen, and a bar will track the progress.
