1
Decide what your lyrics will be. Think about special times you've had with your girlfriend. You want to write lyrics that will remind her of the first time your eyes met, the first time the two of you touche or the first words you spoke to one another. Don't just sing about how you love her more than life itself and can't live without her. That's too cliche. Be specific. Title the song with her name in it if possible.

Write the lyrics down, and then compose on a single instrument. An acoustic guitar or a piano are good choices. Try various keys until you set the mood. Don't go for minor chords because they sound too dark and too sad. Think about using G, C D or A major chords. You can throw a minor in to change from a verse to a chorus, but don't compose an entire love song in minor. Think about songs like "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison and "I Remember You" by Skid Row. These are power ballads written with the chord suggestions above.

Consider using a simple A A B A B structure with A representing the verse and B as the chorus. Throw in a C and a key change after the final B for a dramatic sweeping effect. Key changes not only add variety to the sound of the song, but they capture the listener and lift him/her to another level of excitement.

Record your song on disc and pop it into the CD player without telling her what it is, then sit back and watch her glow when realization sets in and she recognizes the words coming from the stereo are words meant for her.
