How to Clean Silver Necklaces

People have been wearing silver jewelry for thousands of years. The most common problem that people face with silver necklaces is that they fade and tarnish. Over time, they will turn black. There are a wide variety of ways to clean your silver necklaces, some of which work much better than others. Following the steps below will help you get the best results possible and will make your chain look like the day you got it.

Things You'll Need:

  • Used toothbrush
  • Toothpaste, preferably not the gel kind
  • Soft cloth such as an eyeglass cleaning cloth
  • Baking soda
  • Table salt
  • Aluminum foil
  • A pan or dish
  • Silver polish

    Steps to Cleaning you Silver Chain:

  1. Step 1

    Using a toothbrush and white toothpaste, scrub your necklace thoroughly. Rinse the chain in warm water and rub it with a gentle cloth.

  2. Step 2

    Make a cleaning paste of three parts baking soda to one part water. Thoroughly scrub the necklace, rinse with warm water and polish. Alternatively, you can soak the necklace for five minutes in a bowl of water in which you have sprinkled baking soda.

  3. Step 3

    Put a sheet of aluminum foil, your necklace, and a few inches of water in a pan or a dish. Add 2 tsp. of baking soda. Boil for about 5 minutes. Remove and rinse the necklace. Buff it until shiny with your cleaning cloth.

  4. Step 4

    Use a brush or soft cloth to apply silver polish to your necklace. Follow the instructions on the polish.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can use an electric toothbrush when you are scrubbing the chain instead of a regular toothbrush. This often gives more scrubbing power and is sometimes more effective.
