How to Calculate a Refrigerator's Annual kWh?

A refrigerator's annual kilowatt per hour (kWh) rate can give you a general idea of your energy usage, and may also help you to calculate the operating cost of running the fridge. Lowering your overall annual kWh can help you save money on utility bills and reduce your carbon footprint. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Read the yellow label attached to the front or side of your new refrigerator. All fridge labels include their annual kWh. Then consult your monthly utility bill to determine how much your local utility company charges per kilowatt. Multiply this number by your fridge's annual kWh, then multiply by 8765.8. The total is the estimated cost of operating the fridge for a year at your current utility prices.

Review your refrigerator's original owner's manual if you have removed the yellow label from the appliance. The manual will also detail the annual kWh for the fridge. This information is typically noted in the front few pages of the manual.

Contact your refrigerator's manufacturer. Notify the customer representative that you wish to calculate a refrigerator's annual kWh. The representative will ask for the refrigerator's model number, which will be noted in the owner's manual as well as on the white label on the back end of the fridge near its power input. The representative will then be able to provide you with the annual kWh for the appliance.

Connect a watt meter to the fridge. A watt meter measures electrical consumption (see Resources). Leave the meter attached to the refrigerator for at least seven days in order to calculate an accurate average kWh.
