How to Grow Red Dragon Japanese Maple

Red Dragon Japanese maple have fiery red leaves in the fall.

Acer palmatum dissectum 'Red Dragon' is a lace leaf weeping Japanese Maple. Red Dragon Japanese Maple has arching branches which are clothed with large, deeply and finely cut garnet-red leaves in the spring and fiery red in the fall. It is a deciduous shrub that likes shady areas. They are highly desired because of their attractive leaf shapes and colors.

Things You'll Need

• Red dragon Japanese maple
• Shovel
• Slow release fertilizer
• Organic matter

Instructions

1. Select a site for your Red Dragon Japanese Maple. Your site should have good drainage and be in an are that gets partial shade. Morning sun with afternoon shade is best or dappled shade will work too. Dig a hole twice the size of the Red Dragon root ball. For a strong, healthy Red Dragon Japanese Maple amend your soil with plenty of organic matter and mix in a slow release fertilizer. Bury the root-ball to where the old soil line is.

2. Water it thoroughly directly after it has been planted.

3. Add a layer of mulch, two to four inches deep. Make sure the mulch is not touching the trunk of the Red Dragon maple or it will rot the tree. Water your Red Dragon maple every other day for a week until it is established. Once the Red Dragon Japanese Maple is established it is a very low maintenance tree.
