Need a new sofa? Lamp? Lawnmower? EVEN A PIANO? Check on Craigslist, but make sure you find the best buys and make the best deals. Read how!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Email account
  1. Step 1

Figure out what you want, and how much you will pay. Be honest with yourself.

  2. Step 2

Check Craigslist frequently for the item. If it is an item everyone else wants as well, check multiple times a day so you can respond first.

  3. Step 3

When you find an item, write the advertiser immediately and express your interest. If you can pick up quickly, state such. However, ask a question about the item. Even if you know if is what you want, ask something so the person doesn't think you are definitely going to buy.

  4. Step 4

Once the person responds, hopefully stating that the item is still available, ask them if they will consider taking less -- for example, $X amount. Tell them if they accept, you will pick up immediately (if you can), and be respectful and flexible in your email. Buyers want to sell to folks who appear to be reasonable and easy to deal with, so present yourself in that way.

Tips & Warnings
  • Know your budget and stick to it!
  • Where possible, arrange to meet the person somewhere to buy the item -- try to avoid going to someone's house.
  • If you must go to their house, take another person with you for safety reasons.
