This is a step by step tutorial on how to install an HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cable to an HDTV enabling the user to get high definition video and audio (where available).

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • High Definition TV (LCD, Plasma, LED, or Projection). 720p, 1080i or 1080p are all acceptable formats.
  • High Definition Cable Box, Converter Box or Satellite Receiver with HDMI output.
  1. Step 1

Make sure you have an HDTV, Cable Box or equivalent with HDMI output and an HDMI cable. Unplug the power cord from all components before you begin.

  2. Step 2

Check the back of your Cable Box or equivalent for the HDMI output (The only output that the cable will actually fit). Plug one side of the cable in.

  3. Step 3

Check the back or side of your HDTV (depending on model) for the HDMI input (Again, the only place the cable would actually fit). Plug the disconnected end of the cable into the HDMI input of the TV.

  4. Step 4

Reconnect the power cables to all components, turn on the cable box and TV and you should be watching in high definition.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you have the correct cable. Some Cable Boxes and HDTVs use DVI (Digital Video Interface) instead of HDMI.
  • DVI only carries video signal, therefore you would need a separate audio cable (red/white rca plugs or fiber optic cable) for sound.
  • If you have HDMI on one side and DVI on the other, you need an HDMI to DVI cable.
  • Make sure the power cords are unplugged before you start.
