Things You'll Need:
- Pen
- Paper
-
Step 1
First, get a pre-printed grocery list off the Internet. You can find ones that list items and you just circle the items you need ("milk, bread", etc.), or ones that have categories under which you write in what you need (i.e., under the "Cereals" category, list "oatmeal" and "cold cereal".
-
Step 2
Then, canvas your kitchen before you shop, for items that are needed, and additional ingrediants needed for recipes. If you have a list on the fridge, use that.
-
Step 3
Write your list up in the order in which your grocery store stocks foods. For example, list all fruits and vegetables at the top of the list since you usually start in that section.
-
Step 4
Shop the sales -- look for bargains and be flexible. If black beans are at a great price, plan for bean burritos that night, and stock up since canned goods last a while. You planned to make banana bread but pumpkin is on sale, make pumpkin bread instead!
-
Step 5
Try to pick up one "treat" each time you shop -- maybe a new fruit or type of cereal. And remember, kids often have to try a new food an average of 13 times (!) before they develop a taste for it. Thus, feel free to try new things, especially with kids!
