Things You'll Need:
- clothesline
- fans
-
Step 1
Run your ceiling fans with your central air system. Ceiling fans aid in the more even distribution of cool air throughout your home, allowing the central air unit to work a little less for the same result.
-
Step 2
Check to see that your attic has proper air flow. Sometimes boxes and other debris end up covering the vents (called soffit vents). Move any insulation/debris that may be obstructing these vents. If you don't have any soffit vents you should consider installing some as they will keep your attic from building up too much heat, making your air conditioner work harder.
-
Step 3
Only run your pool filter on sunny days when it is most necessary. The ultraviolet rays given off by the sun break down the chlorine used to keep the pool clean. You can also shut your filter down completely at night to save energy.
-
Step 4
If you have an electric dryer, consider setting up a clothesline in your backyard. This simple step could save you up to $40/month depending on how many loads you wash per week.
-
Step 5
When replacing or repairing your roof choose lighter shades of gray, beige or brown. These colors absorb less heat that the standard black or dark gray roofing materials do, effectively lowering your cooling costs from air conditioning and fans.
-
Step 6
Plant trees around your home. The trees not only offer you some much needed shade but your home as well. They also lower the temperature of the area a few degrees.
-
Step 7
Use only the cold water cycle when washing laundry. You can purchase special detergent that is specifically designed to run effectively at this water temperature. Not having to heat the water to wash your laundry will lower your overall utility costs as well.
