File An Unemployment Claim With EDD In California

If you live in California and have recently been laid off due to the failing economy, you might be eligible to collect UI or unemployment insurance with the Employment Development Department or EDD.

No one likes to collect UI however we all have paid into the system and it is your right to collect on it in the event you are laid off due to budget cuts or downsizing. Luckily the process to file a claim is relatively easy and the sooner you do it the faster your claim can be reviewed and processed.

UI generally can be filed in number of ways, you can file in person at your local EDD office, by phone at 1-800-300-5616 or online using their EApply4UI web portal, which I have included a link to at the bottom of this article. For purposes of speedy processing your best bet is to apply online which is the fastest route to take as standing in line or calling in will require long wait times.

Before you start the application process make sure you have all your documentation ready so that you won't be fumbling around for paperwork during the online application process. Generally you will need the following handy when filing online.
      1. Drivers license #
      2. Social Security Number
      3. Last paystub from your employer
      4. Employers phone number
      5. Your start and end date at the company that laid you off
      6. Your tax paperwork for the last two years.
      7. Your citizenship status paperwork or a birth certificate

Once you complete the claim online the wait is roughly two weeks before you will receive word in the mail if you qualify. If you do qualify you are mailed a package containing a guide to benefits and employment services, notice of UI award and a notice of UI claim, however if you are not qualified you can always go through the disputing process and dispute the disqualification of your claim.
