It's always fun to get packages in the mail. But it's a real buzzkill to get excited about a package, only to find its contents broken.

While packaging larger items can get expensive, complicated, and time consuming, packaging smaller items for shipping is easy and relatively cheap. Follow these directions and your gifts, eBay sales, and other packages will arrive intact every time!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Box or padded envelope
  • Packing material, such as tissue paper or bubble wrap
  • Clear packaging tape
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Return address label
  1. Step 1

If you are sending very small items, do not mail them loose. Put them in small zipper bags to keep them from rattling around during shipping and potentially getting lost in your packing materials or worse, broken.

  2. Step 2

Wrap your item is some kind of packaging material. For sturdier items, a sheet or two of tissue paper should be sufficient. For fragile items, use bubble wrap. The more fragile your item is, the more padding you want it to have!

  3. Step 3

Find a box or padded envelope into which your wrapped package fits with little or no wiggle room. You want it to fit snug so that it doesn't get jarred around! If you use a padded envelope, you have the added bonus of an extra layer of bubble wrap for protection.

If you are using a box that was not made specifically for mailing and is very small, check with your post office to make sure that it meets the minimum required dimensions for being sent in the mail!

  4. Step 4

Seal your package well, covering all edges, corners, and gaps with a strip of clear packaging tape. (Or two if you want to be extra careful!)

  5. Step 5

Write the address of the recipient clearly on the front of the package using a waterproof pen or marker. Alternatively, if your pen is not waterproof, you could seal the address and prevent it from running or smearing in the rain by covering it with clear packaging tape. And don't forget your return address!

  6. Step 6

Make sure you take your package into the post office to ship it. Packages over a certain weight cannot be mailed in drop boxes, and pricing varies depending where you are located and where your package is being sent.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are mailing heavier items, you may want to consider using a Priority Mail flat rate box. The small size coast $4.95 to ship regardless of weight, as long as the box closes and seals without modification.
