Things You'll Need:
- a metal hanger
- a small dish
- an orange
- grape jelly
- pliers
- squirrel guard
-
Step 1
To make a loop to hang the feeder from, collapse one corner so it becomes like a thin loop. In the picture, the hand is holding this corner. Pliers are helpful. Be careful not to cut yourself with the sharp hook part.
-
Step 2
The hook will be used to hold an orange half. The other corner of the hanger triangle will be used to mold around the jelly dish. This takes some patience and will depend on the dish you are using. To make the dish stable, bend a little corner of the hanger over the lip of the dish.
-
Step 3
Here's our vising Baltimore OrioleAny dish will work for the jelly. I used a ceramic one because it is more durable than plastic. Squirrels love to chew up plastic!
-
Step 4
When it's ready to be hung up, fill the dish halfway with grape jelly and place a half of an orange on the hook with the fleshy side up.
-
Step 5
If you're lucky, they'll build a nest and you might meet a little Oriole like this.Hang from a tree branch under a squirrel guard or plastic collar so the squirrels don't eat everything. Make sure the oriole feeder is hung far out on a branch so other animals can't jump to it from the trunk.

on 6/11/2009 I've never been able to attract orioles to my feeders. I knew they liked oranges, but I never heard of trying grape jelly. I'll definitely give it a try. Thanks.
