Things You'll Need:
- You must live in an area that will pay the deposit on returned cans and bottles.
-
Step 1
Know what has a deposit. Look at all your beverage containers. Sodas, beer, wine coolers and liquor all have a deposit. Some juices and sport drinks also have a deposit.
-
Step 2
Set up a bin in your home to collect all your own returnables. Be sure to rinse them so they won’t smell or attract insects, and count them before you turn them in.
-
Step 3
When you go to a party or gathering, offer to set up a bin or bag to collect the guest’s empty drink vessels. Many hosts will appreciate the help in keeping the place clean, and reducing their trash output.
-
Step 4
Ask your friends and family to keep a bag or bin and collect their empty containers.
-
Step 5
If you go to a park or public area, keep an empty grocery bag and pick up any cans and bottles on the ground. You get the change, and you keep the area free of litter.
-
Step 6
If you’re out on your bicycle or motorcycle, carry a canvas sack or duffel bag. As you go along, collect cans and bottles from the sides of the road. You make a profit, and help reduce litter and improve the look of the area.
-
Step 7
When you’re returning, check around first. Most vessels have a $0.05 or $0.10 deposit, but some places will offer a penny or two more per container to encourage you to use their service. It’s worth checking around, as those extra pennies can really add up.
-
Step 8
Be sure you count your containers before turning them in to make sure the service you’re returning to is honest.
