A can and a bottle

Returning cans and bottles for the deposit can be a good way to make a little pocket money. It also helps the environment. As of 2011, only 11 states allowed businesses or recycling centers to pay for cans and bottles. For example, the state of Iowa does accept them, but the state of Nebraska does not. If you live in Omaha, Nebraska, you would need to go across the Missouri River to Council Bluffs, Iowa to turn in any cans and bottles for a refund.

Check the beverage containers themselves for deposit information. Soft drink cans, beer, wine coolers, juices and sport drinks can be accepted for deposits. Some have the information printed on the container.

Set up a bin in your home to collect returnable items. Rinse them out first so they will not attract insects. Watch for other discarded cans and bottles at parties and parks.

Check several recycle sites for their deposit pay. Most pay 5 or 10 cents per deposit, but some offer a penny or two more per container to encourage you to use their service or as part of a recycling campaign. Count the cans you deposit so you know just how much of a payment to expect.
