Follow these steps and you'll lower your costs

  1. Step 1

    Look for hazards in and around your home.Hazards are: missing handrails on steps,loose or missing steps or flooring on porch, missing downspouts,Loose or missing shingles on the roof, Trees close to the home or limbs overhanging the roof. No smoke detectors, deadbolt locks, fire extinguishers fuse boxes and any that are under 100 amp service. Unfenced swimming pools, Unfenced Trampolines, Trip spots on sidewalks and driveways yards with garbage and junk. Get a security system if you can

  2. Step 2

    Fix and repair any hazards that you find. The ones you can't do yourself, hire a contractor. Insurance companies have inspectors come to your home when you take out a policy. They are looking for hazards. Any hazards will cause your rates to be higher

  3. Step 3

    Once these things are corrected shop around. Shop online and in your local yellow pages. Try to go with the same company that you have your auto policy with.

  4. Step 4

    When you decide on a company tell your agent you want an inspection. That way they'll see that you don't have any hazards

  • Weatherize your home, some very simple things can cut your heating costs
  • Add a sprinkler system if you can.
  • Update your hot water heater and furnace if possible
  • Install a 200 amp fuse box if possible
  • Keep clean air filters and oil filters on your auto, this will cut gas costs
