Step 1
Remove everything from your room except large furniture and rugs. This includes all accessories, lamps, books, small pieces of furniture, and artwork. Clean the room, furniture, and accessories very well.
-
Step 2
Look at the placement of the large furniture in your room. Can it be relocated to a different place in the room or another room all together? Is there another large piece of furniture in your home that would look better in this room? Don't be afraid to experiment or do something non traditional like turning your sofa on a diagonal.
-
Step 3
Once you have your large furniture in place, it is time to add in your medium sized pieces. This includes your small pieces of furniture, large artwork, lamps, and other similar items. Experiment with their position. Don't just put them back where they were originally without thinking about other locations first.
Is there something that would work better in another room or something in another room that would look better in this room? Not everything that came out of this room needs to go back in. Don't overcrowd the room with unnecessary stuff. -
Step 4
Add back in your accessories and artwork. Simplicity is the key. Try to add in very few items that are non-functional because they often make rooms look cluttered. Not every surface needs to be covered. Are there any items that would look better in another room or other items in another room that would look better in this room?
Most importantly - do not add in things that you do not love or that don't serve a purpose. You do not have to display everything you have or everything that was given to you as a gift. Consider putting out some accessories for part of the year and others during the rest of the year.
Try to cluster similar groups of items. Group framed photos all on one table. Group similar figurines all together instead of throughout your room. -
Step 5
Consider swapping unused decor items with neighbors. You can also sell items that you are not using and use the money to purchase new decor for your room.
