Things You'll Need:
- Patience
- Love
- Diligence
-
Step 1
Determine that the candidate for Gerus is truly interested in Judaism. There is no "three-time" rule, but the Gerus candidate is exposed to the difficulties of conversion and must be able to live the rest of her/his life as a Jew
-
Step 2
Review some basic beliefs of Judaism. Read the Rambam's Thirteen Principles of Belief. I suggest that the candidate read Rabbi Luzzato's "The Way of God" (Derech Hashem) and Rabbi Pliskin's "My Father My King". Discuss these works with them.
-
Step 3
Have your candidate join http://groups.yahoo.com/group/orthodoxconversiontojudaism/
-
Step 4
Begin teaching the Sabbath. Invite your candidate to join you for Shabbat meals. Discuss both the positive and negative aspects of the Sabbath. Ask your candidate to read To Be a Jew chapter, “The Sabbath: An Island in Time” and discuss it with her/him.
-
Step 5
Teach your candidate to read Hebrew and introduce her/him to the Siddur and Machzor. Ask your candidate to buy a Siddur. Discuss food blessings. Teach her/him to read the Shma.
-
Step 6
Have your candidate read the How-To for going kosher and keeping Shabbat. Have your candidate gradually implement the steps there.
-
Step 7
Your candidate should now feel ready to attend services and read the service in Hebrew. You should help her/him get acclimated to the synagogue service. Introduce her/him to your local rabbi and friends.
-
Step 8
Your candidate is now ready for you to turn her/him over to the local rabbi to finish conversion preparation and eventually meet with the Beis Din. You continue to offer / find Shabbat hospitality for her/him and continue to study with her/him.
