Instead of traditional an in-person job interview, many companies conduct a job video interview instead.

A job video interview is similar to a standard job interview, but you are interviewed through the video instead of in person. This gives the interviewing company a chance to review your job interview video multiple times with various levels of management. Because your job interview video will be reviewed a number of times, you want to make sure you come across and professional and prepared as possible.

Read the steps below to help you prepare for a job video interview so that you have a better chance of landing the job.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

** Prepare yourself as you would for a regular job interview **

Do all the preparations for a job video interview as you would for a regular interview. This includes reviewing the company website, reading over the job description, preparing answers for likely questions ahead of time, and more.

  2. Step 2

** Dress professionally as you would for a regular interview **

Don't assume that only your head is going to be showing and so you only have to wear clothes that are appropriate from the shoulders up. You never know if the rest of your body will show, even for just a short time. So be safe and dress for your job interview video as you would for a regular interview.

  3. Step 3

** Practice videoing yourself beforehand **

Before the actual job video interview, practice making a video of yourself beforehand. You can use a webcam or digital camera video setting if you do not have the actual videoing equipment that will be used for the job interview itself. Practice speaking clearly and looking straight into the camera.

Watch the video afterwards and critique yourself. You might find you need to project your voice better or that your eyes seem to wonder.

If possible, ask someone else to look at the video as well so that you have an objective opinion.

  4. Step 4

** Make sure you know how to use the video equipment **

If you are not sure how to use the videoing equipment, do not be afraid to ask. If possible, get familiar with the equipment and test it out beforehand.

  5. Step 5

** Keep the space in front of you clear **

Before the job video interview begins, clear off the area in front of you and around you. If there is a desk next to your seat, make sure it does not have messy papers on it. Make sure your purse is not hanging over your shoulder. If the job video interview is in your own setting, make sure to prepare a clean area in your house.

  6. Step 6

** Remove all distracting sounds **

Close windows if there is a noise coming from outside. Make sure your feet are comfortable and will not be knocking into things. During the interview, make sure not to tap your feet or squeak your chair. Any little sound can be magnified in the video.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to speak clearly into the video camera during the interview.
