Cooking over a campfire

When you're camping, kitchen supplies should be kept in a dry, cool location away from weather elements and insects. Kitchen supplies may include utensils, cooking pots and pans and paper goods. Choosing waterproof, airtight containers will help protect and preserve your supplies.

Things You'll Need

  • Milk crates
  • Plastic containers in assorted sizes: 2-gallon container, 8-gallon all-purpose canister, large four-door mini tower, gadget box, silverware caddy.
  • Empty spice jars

Instructions

    • 1

Organize the camp kitchen supplies by categories; eating utensils, cooking utensils, dry spices, cooking equipment, napkins, cloths and cleansers.

    • 2

Choose a location that is dry and close to the camp kitchen area. Lay down a waterproof tarp if the items will be stored on the ground. This will protect the items from dampness and bugs.

    • 3

Place items such as canned goods inside of milk crates. Stack upright for easy carrying and storage.

    • 4

Keep herbs and spices in baggies and spice jars. Store in a 2-gallon clear storage container. The container keeps critters out, prevents moisture exposure and allows you to see what's inside.

    • 5

Store eating utensils in a large four-door mini-tower storage unit. Organize by fork, spoon and knives. Place the adjustable silverware caddy on top to carry utensils to the table. Use a gadget box to store items such as food-prep utensils, skewers, bottle openers, toothpicks and matches. An 8-gallon canister can be used for paper products such as napkins, cloth rags and towels.

    • 6

Place larger mismatched items such as small pots, grill accessories and electrical cords in a large, airtight storage box.

    • 7

Set up the cast iron grill bar over the fire. Place hooks along the top. Arrange various pots and dutch ovens along the grill bar. This is a good storage area for heavy cast iron when it's not in use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure all items are dry and free of food residue before storing. Do not keep food where animals can get into it.

  • Do not ever store fuel and matches together in any container.
