How to Use a Nebulizer on an Infant
A nebulizer turns liquid medication into mist. It is the easiest way to get medication directly to the lungs. Typically, a nebulizer is used to deliver medications for asthma and other respiratory problems. It is used in hospitals and doctor's offices, but is also easy to use at home. If your baby has a respiratory condition, her doctor is likely to prescribe medication given by a nebulizer.

1
Assemble the nebulizer according to the manufacturer's instructions. Bring the assembled nebulizer and the medication near enough to the chair that you will be able to reach it when seated.
-
2
Sit in a comfortable position and cradle the infant in your arms. She will be more tolerant of the procedure if you are both comfortable.

3
Put the medication into the nebulizer cup. Dilute with normal saline if prescribed.
-
4
Position the mask and secure it over the infant's face. If he will not tolerate the strap, it is just as effective to hold the mask close to his face.
-
5
Turn the nebulizer on to begin to administer the medication. The treatment is complete when the mist stops--usually five to 10 minutes. Turn off the nebulizer.

Tips & Warnings
It is even easier to use a nebulizer on an infant who is asleep, but do not feed the baby just before the nebulizer treatment. The medication may make an infant cough. If her stomach is full, she may vomit.
Do not use the nebulizer without the mask. The spray of medication in a concentrated mist can cause skin damage to the infant's face. If possible, wash the infant's face after the treatment. Medication delivered by nebulizer may irritate the skin.
