How to Remove a Moen Faucet

How to Remove a Moen Faucet thumbnail
Moen bathroom faucets have one handle rather than two.

Moen is one of the largest manufacturers of household faucets in the United States. Moen faucet handles use single-handle cartridge designs, whereby a single faucet handle is used to control the amount of water that exits the faucet's spout while simultaneously controlling the temperature of that water. Moen faucets are fairly durable, but leaks can result when the single O-ring at the base of the cartridge breaks or otherwise distorts. Thankfully, Moen produces many different repair kits for its faucets, and the repair process is simple. Of course, the first step to either repair or replace the defective faucet is to remove the existing one. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the structure's water supply. Although the main water supply can be turned off, sometimes only the water supply to the particular appliance to be repaired can be turned off. This is most common when a kitchen or bathroom sink faucet is defective. Locate the two water supply lines underneath the sink. Each line will have a single handle. Turning each handle in a clockwise direction will turn the water supply off. If the water supply lines are not accessible, the structure's water supply can be turned off at the water meter.

Remove the index plate from the center of the faucet's handle. The index plate is only a decorative piece that is used to cover the handle's retaining screw. The plate can be pried off of the handle with the blade of a flathead screwdriver.

    • 3

Remove the faucet's handle by first removing the handle's single retaining screw with a Phillips head screwdriver, then by pulling the handle off of the faucet.

    • 4

Remove the single bonnet nut that surrounds the top of the faucet in a counterclockwise direction with a pair of adjustable pliers.

    • 5

Pull the faucet straight up with the pliers to complete the Moen faucet removal process.
